Description Cardiff is better known for good surf than good diving, but there are good reef systems and thick kelp patties that offer divers some great opportunities when the waves are calm. Typically the diving is best here at the beginning and end of the summer season.
History of San Elijo State Beach The abundance of kelp in this area was discovered early on; according to the Cardiff Chamber of Commerce, the first industry established in Cardiff-by-the-Sea was a kelp works, built in 1912.
General Considerations There is often high surf in this area.
